Interview: John Malkovich

We’re back with yet another interview from the stars of CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE. Today we’re joined by John Malkovich. Welcome, John.

Hey, it’s so good to be here. Thank you.

In CON AIR 2, you play the terrifying fusion of Lord English and Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, the respective antagonists of Con Air 1 and Homestuck. What kind of a dynamic do the combined villains bring into the movie? What makes them special together?

First let me make this clear; I’m not playing Lord English in any way. Grissom, whom I play, is only a puppet to him. He resides in his mind, in a shoulder devil sort of way. Except there is three of them. Caliborn, Arquiusprite, and Gamzee’s scraps are all in there. That head is crammed full of asses.

Lord English doesn’t have direct control over your character?

No, none of the three components have full control, but the orders are difficult to resist. So if you see me start honking relentlessly on the big screen, you know the juggalo is out and there’s nothing you can do. There’s nothing none of us can do.

So you’re down with the clown?

That is a very inappropriate question. Let’s move on.

Uh, is there anything you learned from this role?

It was an interesting thought experiment. I think I know something new about Lord English now. I’m fairly sure I can expect his next move now.

The phrase “put the bunny back in the box” has become quite a joke since John Egbert said “put the bunny back in the box”, repeating Nick Cage’s classic words “put the bunny back in the box” from the original Con Air. Does anyone say “put the bunny back in the box” in CON AIR 2, and if so, will it be your character who is asked to put the bunny back in the box?

Yes, someone will say “put the bunny back in the box”. And yes, I’ve had the pleasure of being asked to put the bunny back in the box. In fact, multiple people will be asked to put the bunny back in the box.

Will the bunny be put back in the box?

The bunny will be put back in the box.

The bunny is being put back to the box, and so is our interview. It’s time to close this one. Huge thanks to John for coming here.

You’re welcome. I’m glad to have a chance to speak to the fans. After all we’re all Homestuck trash, aren’t we?

Indeed, some wise words from John Malkovich. Thank you for reading. CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE in theaters 4th of April 2019, 24h streams on the 13th.

Malkovich was kind of a fake-antagonist due to him being a stand-in for English before Buscemi became literally him. I don’t know if anyone saw him that way, though. I think this series of interviews having a story caught most people by surprise. Anyway Malkovich’s whole story was clear by now. The process went like this:

Malkovich’s Con Air 2 character is dead. But if Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom was inexplicably back for the sequel it would be stupid funny. However, it still needs to be justified. Answer: He’s brought back as a Cyborg. And what if he was brought back by English in the movie? And be possessed by him? Con Air and Homestuck main antagonists, in one? Also with a Terminator-esque appearance due to English’s skull motif and Grissom’s head being crushed at the end of Con Air. Perfect for this stupid fictional movie.

But what if he was really a cyborg sent to hunt down English, as an additional Terminator reference? It’s insanity, absolute perfection. The last piece was the creator of Cyborg Malkovich. For a few moments I considered making a Skynet reference with Skaianet, but the other option I had was much more interesting.

Malkovich's backstory had it's own inspiration, which was a fan speculation I wanted to address. I used to see people wonder what happened to the alpha kids after the events of Caliborn’s Masterpiece, as they were left stranded on the Land of Colors and Mayhem in his dead session. Y’know, the one where he had to blast planets into the black hole into which his Skaia collapsed? That one.

Caliborn’s planet was the post-Scratch Earth, which was moved from its original universe to the one created at the end of Homestuck. Essentially, Earth C, long after the civilization the humans and trolls created. That gave me the opportunity to justify how Dirk got Malkovich’s body, and the reason to send him back to the post-Scratch Earth. I don’t think any of the alpha kids were aware of English’s presence there. Maybe Dirk, knowing how he would turn out, but perhaps even he wasn’t that way yet. There’s a lot of subtle meta-worldbuilding regarding that into which I’ll get more in The Other Side Commentary.
