Interview: Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson

We’re back with news about CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE. This time, we’re joined by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, the main stars of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff: Cinematic Experience. Welcome, Ben and Owen.

STILLER: Thanks, this is an honor.

WILSON: Yeah, thanks, great to be here.

So, I know there are a lot of people asking what is SBaHJ: CE all about. What’s its purpose at the middle of the movie? Is it related to the plot? Can you tell us about it?

WILSON: It’s separate from the movie. You can watch the movie without seeing the Bro-Jeff intermission.

STILLER: But it adds a lot. The movie is not the same without it.

WILSON: True, true. Everyone in the production would say its the true experience to watch it with the intermission.

STILLER: Yeah. Your perception of the whole movie will change.

I realized that your roles as Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff are reversed in the art we received for the interview. Is this canon?

STILLER: Yes. This was a last minute decision. We sat on it for a long time, but we had a serious talk with Andrew. He gave the green light, so here we are.

WILSON: The truth is we discovered I was much more of a Sweet Bro than Ben. I’m much more grounded and goofy as a person, while his impression is surreal and let’s say, very carnal.

STILLER: You’ll see it in the movie, and you’ll believe.

My next question was how do you get into your roles, but it sounds like you’re almost like made for them.

STILLER: Exactly.

WILSON: Wow!

STILLER: [laughter]

WILSON: We haven’t had this much fun in any role in ages. Ben especially, he’s found a new life through Hella Jeff.

STILLER: I feel 50 years younger every time we shoot.

So, what are your opinions on the marathon runs, where the SBaHJ intermission is repeated for hours?

STILLER: First off, it’s an amazing artistic decision from Andrew. The Cinematic Experience is incredibly surreal to begin with, but the more you watch it, the better it gets.

WILSON: We did actually try one of those marathon runs together.

STILLER: It was the best experience of my entire life.

WILSON: Yeah, I had to give up after 3 hours. As thrilling it is, it’s really bright and flashy. I couldn’t take it. Too much of an eyestrain. Ben was there for the full 34 hours.

STILLER: I would’ve watched more!

WILSON: You had that episode, it was bizarre.

STILLER: What episode?

What episode? Can you explain?

WILSON: Ben actually believed he was Hella Jeff for a while after that. They had to drag him out of the theater. Weren’t you actually restrained?

STILLER: No? I, honest to god, don’t know what you’re talking about.

WILSON: He’s still not acknowledging it.

STILLER: I don’t know what he’s talking about. I don’t know what he’s talking about.

Is there anything else you can tell us about your characters?

STILLER: Is there?

WILSON: I don’t know. What about that thing Andrew told you about Jeff?

STILLER: Oh yeah. Hella Jeff’s canonical birthname is Hellacious Jeffrey.

What about Sweet Bro?

WILSON: We’re not allowed to know. It’s actually one of the most protected secrets Andrew has.

Alright, our time is up. The production team has sent the readers one last surprise, so they can continue enjoying that. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, thank you for coming.

STILLER: Thanks, it was great.

WILSON: Yeah, come see the movie. It’s crazier than a road lizard!

STILLER: [laughter] That’s in the movie!

WILSON: Yeah. See you fans there.

STILLER: See you.

Here’s the surprise the production team sent us, steaming hot from the factory. I hope you know what to do with it.

I actually watched real interviews of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson to get this one right. I never did that again with any of the other interviews. So I guess it’s just a fun fact? I wonder if that gives me the right to claim that this is the most canon instance of Ben and Owen in the entirety of Homestuck. Not just in the fan works, but also within the official materials.

Not only did I include a classic Owen “wow!”, I also referenced his “crazier than a road lizard” catchphrase he uses in several movies he acts in. I mean I’m just saying this if you thought that was a weird and random thing. Even if that puts me in the risk of being perceived as weird and random. And to that all I can say is “xD”.

Stiller’s “madness” was hinted here for the first time. I had no idea what would come of it later on, honest to fucking god almighty Stiller himself. I’m glad how it turned out in the end.

So while I had no other updates planned when I made the ARG, it was pretty clear from the beginning it could use some hints to help the players to put some things together. The SBaHJs were a pretty natural way to deliver that information. Plus I had learned a lot about the process of making that kind of art as I worked on An Evvreyday Struggle, so that part was pretty easy.
