Interview: Steve Buscemi

After yesterday’s announcement, today we have an interview with one of the stars of CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE, Steve Buscemi. Good to have you here, Steve.

Thanks for having me. The joy is on my side, honestly. Homestuck™ has been dear to me ever since I was introduced to it, and I’m glad to finally be a part of it.

Let’s start with that, Steve. How did you come across Homestuck?

Well, it’s a convoluted story, like everything with Homestuck. I and most of the central cast became aware of the comic because of some sort of promotion Dante Basco was doing at the time, a few years back. We instantly fell in love with the characters and the story, Andrew really did a great job with it.

The promotion was known as Homestuck 2.0, Dante Basco’s initiative to make Homestuck known through mainstream media. How did that evolve into CON AIR 2?

Well, by the time I got involved, the production had been going on and off for a few years. There was practically no budget, no script, no actors. They had gone through lots of concepts, lots of ideas with Andrew. Only after the main cast joined the team the script really took form.

But even after that this was a passion project. We didn’t get pay, the sets were really primitive. Only after we got the support of VIZ Media, we got great costumes and a few exotic filming locations. CGI too, with Jack Noir and The Mayor, who they did with Andy Serkis, entirely mo-cap. At that point we had filmed half of the movie, the first Act. Andrew decided not to touch the complete scenes, so you’ll see a massive change in quality halfway through. It adds kind of a metatextual element to it. The real fans understand, it’s peak Homestuck.

Sounds exciting, and I know I’m not alone with that opinion. So I’ve heard you’ll reprise your role as Garland "the Marietta Mangler" Green. Is this true?

Sort of. The movie begins with John using his teleportation powers to save me. Me, as in me, Steve Buscemi. That’s actually a prequel scene to Con Air 1, where Lord English attempts to possess me after being defeated at the end of Homestuck. The failed attempt causes me to develop the split personality of Garland Green.

Does this suggest that for the entirety of Con Air 1, your role was yourself, playing Garland Greene?

Yes. Not only does it suggest it, it’s explicitly confirmed.

Can you tell anything else about your role?

Sure. I’m kind of a mentor figure to John Egbert. He returns to me after the end of the original Con Air. We have this special bond, as I was the first person from his childhood favorite movie he met. He assists me in my struggle against my Garland persona, and I introduce him to Cameron Poe, who’s played by Nick. Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron is also there, John sort of brings him with his teleportation powers. (Big Man’s note: He means John’s Retcon abilities)

That’s a lot of information. Is there anything else you can tell us?

Yes, but I don’t want to spoil it. We’ve played kind of fast and loose with NDA’s, but nobody wants to spoil anything. Like I said it’s a passion project, we want to surprise the fans. What I’ve told you takes place in the first five minutes or so. It’s a fast-paced movie. There’s no handholding.

Alright, looks like our time is up. Any parting words for the fans?

It’s been an honor to be a part of this. I can’t wait until the movie comes out, it’s going to blow your minds. You’re all amazing.

Thanks to Steve Buscemi for the interview, and thank you for reading.

Have you ever considered how weird Garland Greene is as a character? Like, he’s a brutal serial murderer, but the movie seems pretty sympathetic towards him. On surface level that could be a heartwarming if not a bit gritty story about rehabilitation, but this guy killed several dozen people. And yes, while his murderousness is pretty much an informed attribute as we never see him actually kill anyone, he literally tells Dameron Poe that he wore a girl’s head as a hat! And we’re just supposed to let his ass walk away at the end like he’s now been fully healed from the murderer disease?

I remember casting him as John’s mentor in the fictional movie as an offbeat gag, and after I decided to continue the updates I immediately felt I needed to explain that away. I’m not sure when the Buscemi as Garland possessed by English plot thread came into the mix as an actual thing that would happen, but I don’t think it was before this update. Immediately afterwards I’m fully certain, as this post was what inspired it.

If you’ve read the weirdass continuation/cross-over work The Other Side, you may have picked up on some hints that there was even a greater mastermind behind Buscemi’s corruption. Besides Lord English, of course. Buscemi was in a way “primed” for corruption target, and if you’re up on the highly intricate in-universe timeline of events, you’d know that priming happened on the 14th, the very day this update was posted irl.

Later in this story we learn that the story Buscemi was telling here was utter fabrication. Lord English didn’t try possess Buscemi in Con Air 2, and whatever he is trying to tell is probably just English trying to make himself more important in the movie than he is.

There’s also an alternative interpretation. Buscemi’s actual corruption was already underway at this point. Perhaps inserting LE into the movie’s narrative was an early symptom? Or, more horrifyingly, it was Buscemi consciously fighting against English’s grasp and trying to warn us.

Unfortunately, though, as the Garland Greene subplot in Con Air 2 was entirely fake, we never get to understand why the hell was he counted as one of John’s mentors, even as his role was much smaller as Buscemi-English was saying and not guaranteeing any kind of retroactive redemption arc? The world may never know…
