Interview: Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson #4

We’re back with yet another interview. The fan favorites of the CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE are back. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, welcome.

WILSON: God damn. God damn. Ben come with me. We need to go.

STILLER: Not yet.

What’s going on?

WILSON: What isn’t? A person is dead, everyone is losing their minds, Ben is fucking insane, he’s the top suspect in the murder case, I know he’s innocent but nobody believes that, we’re trying to hide but he insists on coming here. Most of the cast is avoiding the interviews. Only the nutjobs come here, as you’ve probably noticed.

Yeah, I’m used to it by now. What’s Stiller’s deal this time?

WILSON: No clue.

STILLER: Fulfilling my purpose. The timeline is slowly but surely collapsing, and I need to do whatever I can to keep it together.

What does that mean?

STILLER: It means I have a message.

WILSON: Another Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff? Ben, where are you getting these? I didn’t see anyone give it to you.

STILLER: It doesn’t matter now. All that matters is that it is published. They must know the truth.

Alright, will do. Was that all from you boys?

WILSON: I hope so.

STILLER: Yes. For now. But there is more to come.

WILSON: Oh fuck.

STILLER: That’s for later. Come now, Owen. We can leave.

WILSON: Oh thank heavens.

Thanks Ben, Owen. Here’s the SBaHJ for you folks.

Okay, so this bit is kind of interesting. It’s easy to dismiss Stiller's apocalyptic preachings as nonsense, but he’s clearly addressing the audience, and insists that they must learn the truth. In-universe this makes no sense, but when you realize he’s referring to the real-world ARG players, it has some wild long-running implications.

The SBaHJs were crucial for the ARG players in solving the puzzles. Especially the second-to-last one. So if Stiller wanted them to succeed, the ARG result must’ve been important, right? Well, in the short run, no. It was just a misleading hint to Homestuck receiving new pages. As this story once held the guise of possible officiality, that of course was something big if this really was an official thing. Obviously in hindsight it wasn’t, but does that invalidate the end result? No, because it was needed in one of the The Other Side ARG puzzles in order to proceed.

So I think we can assume that Stiller was referencing the truths that ARG might hold. None of them relate to “keeping together the timeline” which Stiller claims is his “purpose”. So what is he really talking about? Not to get too deeply in the meta-worldbuilding I mentioned yet, I’ll just say that the existence of The Other Side and the further connections to a larger universe did not yet exist in this story. So in a way, once this story ends, this timeline fades out of existence as it’s both a doomed offshoot and an unofficial fan-work.

Stiller, however, is somehow aware of this. Perhaps being turned into a representation of Hella Jeff and Dave’s ironic bullshittery gave him this meta-awareness that allows him to understand that this timeline has no future. Yet, seemingly he also knows this universe does follow some sort of logic and is self-consistent to a degree (self-burnnn). By directly addressing the audience, Stiller foreshadows his actions as crucial. Thus, after the illusion of officiality has completely faded out, he has bought some remaining relevancy for the timeline until his foreshadowing comes into fruition, allowing it to persist further.
